The South Africa Network for Nuclear Education, Science, and Technology (SAN-NEST) is a network of South African institutions that offers education, training, and research opportunities in the field of nuclear science and technology (NST). The network is an affiliate of the AFRA Network for Nuclear Education, Science, and Technology (AFRA-NEST). The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) supports the development of these networks. Their platform facilitates the sharing of resources in the field of NST to contribute to development at the national, regional, and global levels. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) provides assistance and resources to educational networks in all geographical locations.

SAN-NEST Purpose

1.            Establish joint university degrees with suitable nuclear content in line with national and industry needs. Realised through sharing of research facilities and presenting various modules at different institutions.

2.            Facilitate continuous professional development (CPD) accredited courses delivered in specific topic areas drawing on expertise from member universities and advertised/administered centrally by SAN-NEST.

3.            Develop training programmes (certificate programmes) for specialised nuclear organisations delivered.

4.            Generate and host technical material and host outreach events such as nuclear knowledge sharing events and career fairs.

5.            Provide a mechanism to advice on research priorities in the form of research focus/advice groups at member institutions.

6.            To promote the scientific interests of members and communication between stakeholders and government institutions including with the goal of suitably qualified and experienced person (SQEP) trained for the advancement of nuclear science and technology in South Africa and Africa as a whole.

Education Development

Developing harmonized approaches for education and training in nuclear science and technology by establishing core curricula and facilitating mutual recognition of university qualifications; Evaluation and monitoring of educational programmes.
